Black beans, also known as the black turtle bean, are a variety of bean that originated 7000 years ago in Southern Mexico and Central America. Like corn, which is also indiginous to the Americas, it is a frequent foodstuff in those regions. In Mexico, as in many other parts of Latin America, it is known as the "frijol negro" (plural: "frijoles negros").
